Reading

We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage and the Equals documents for English as a basis for our English Reading teaching. We adapt the scheme of work to meet the personalised needs of all the pupils in school.

We promote a love of books; using personalised photograph books and books linked to areas of special interest.  The development of skills in communication and interaction is given a high priority throughout school and this is taught alongside Reading and Writing throughout school.

All classes have a comfortable and inviting space where books can be read and shared together. Where appropriate classes have a book corner/class library where pupils can explore and choose a range of  fiction/non fiction books. In Oak Base some pupils access the local public library at Shipley and loan books to either read in school or take home to share with their family.

A key step in developing our pupil’s early reading skills and phonic skills is developing their understanding and consistent use of Objects of Reference and visual supports such as our Core Vocabulary and Language Boards. All activities are enhanced by the use of appropriate visual supports to promote understanding of the activity, independence and letter and word recognition.
